There was a time during my initial teaching career as a yoga teacher where I placed (too much) effort into my music playlist. I cared about how the music flowed to my sequences, about the rhythm, and the beat. I don’t do any of that now. In fact, I teach 90% without music as I believe the practice should be taken as an inner journey without any more added noise, and I’ve really stuck to my word. We have enough noise and stimulus in our daily lives as it is, I don’t see the benefit to add more. At least my my style of teaching.
That being said, however, I do still believe there is a time and place for music in certain classes to reach a particular outcome you want to achieve with your students. For flow class, yin classes, restorative classes, deep relaxation and easing into the body to feel more is fundamental – but not easy to achieve.
